Australia has plenty of glitz. From Sydney to Cairns, you’ll find great tourist destinations that mix sun and sand with theme parks, tours, shows and anything else you could want. But to see the real Australia, the one the locals escape to, you’d do well to visit Coffs Harbour and the Holiday Coast. Located about 344 miles north of Sydney, this small town avoids the resort feel while bringing you plenty of resort amenities.

Make no mistake, there’s plenty to do here. Tour the Banana plantations, the Porpoise Pool, and the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden. Or, scuba dive at Solitary Islands Marine Park and take a whitewater ride on the Nymboida River.
