Everyone Wins at the Wyndham Championship

With the cheers of the hometown crowd behind him, third-year touring professional Webb Simpson won the fifth annual Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. This was Simpson’s first PGA TOUR win, solidifying the 2008 Wake Forest graduate as a serious contender in the upcoming TOUR Championship, the season-ending event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs. Simpson was able to share his win with his wife and newborn son, who were both in attendance.

If the excitement of the tournament wasn’t enough, Wyndham Worldwide made a lasting impression for those in attendance. From hole-in-one contests rewarding Derek Lamely with vacations for life, to a man-made beach and fundraising activities that engaged spectators, the Wyndham Championship was an unforgettable experience for all.

For years, the central focus of The Wyndham Championship has been philanthropy, and this year’s tournament was no exception. Through its philanthropic program, Wishes by Wyndham, more than $385,000 was donated during the tournament.

The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital received two brand new Nintendo Wii Fun Centers donated on behalf of Wishes by Wyndham and Starlight Children’s Foundation, and enjoyed a “vacation day” filled with fun and surprises. The First Tee of the Triad, a nonprofit organization that teaches children character development and life skills through the game of golf, was selected by fans as the first Charity of Choice winner. The First Tee chapter was presented with a check from Wishes by Wyndham for $100,000, and in turn, donated $5,000 to each of the four runners-up organizations: United Way, Victory Junction, Greensboro Children’s Museum and the Autism Society of North Carolina. As part of the tournament’s innovative social media presence, Wishes by Wyndham also donated $50,000 to each of its three signature charities, Starlight Children's Foundation, Christel House, and Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, as patrons “checked in” at the Wyndham Championship through Facebook and Foursquare.

“Philanthropy has been an important part of the Wyndham Championship, and what makes this event so very special,” says Stephen P. Holmes, chairman and CEO, Wyndham Worldwide. “We are so proud to support so many wonderful organizations through our tournament, and exploring new ways to spread their message to new supporters.”

The tournament not only ended with the crowning of a new champion, but also a final donation to a local charity. Wyndham Worldwide and the Wyndham Championship awarded the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina with $100,000 in an effort to provide 700,000 meals to local residents in need.

Wyndham Worldwide is continually focused on philanthropy and improving the lives of others. Visit Wishes by Wyndham to learn how Wyndham Worldwide continues to better our communities by enriching the lives of disadvantaged children throughout the communities in which it operates.
